Deputies' Encounter With Dog Causes 3-Car Crash

2 Cars Run Into Back Of Patrol Car That Slowed Down For Dog In Freeway

A dog running across a busy downtown freeway caused a chain reaction accident Monday night that landed two sheriff deputies in the hospital, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Investigators said the deputies were riding in the same car traveling south on Interstate 45 at North Main Street near downtown Houston when the dog ran in front of their car at about 10:30 p.m.

The deputies slowed down but that is when the driver of a Ford Mustang came around a curve on the freeway and was unable to stop before crashing into the rear of the patrol car.

"The Mustang rode the wall up around the patrol car and actually went back into the roadway in front of the patrol car and the patrol car had a secondary impact with the Mustang again," Harris County Sheriff's Department Deputy Matthew Smith said.

After that collision, a pickup truck also ran into the back of the deputies' car.

Both deputies and the driver of a truck were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver and a passenger inside the Mustang, along with the dog, were not injured.
