Groups Combine MLK Parade Efforts

1 Parade Will Honor Late Civil Right Leader

POSTED: Thursday, January 12, 2006

Two Houston organizations that have fought for years over honoring Dr, Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy have finally come together to share his dream.

The Black Heritage Society and organizers of the MLK Grande Parade have agreed to hold a single parade honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The parade will be held downtown on Monday at 10 a.m.

However, the Black Heritage Society said it still is not happy that it does not have more input into the way the event will be organized.

"The only thing keeping us from saying, 'The heck with it … let's lose everything,' is the fact that I am committed to Dr. King's father," Black Heritage Society Ovide Duncantell said.

"I'm glad it's resolved. We don't need two parades and two different emphasis for a person who obviously made great contributions to us," Houstonian Lewis Cook said.

The two groups have hosted separate parades for more than a decade.
