60 explosive-detecting dogs will be attending Super Bowl 51

HOUSTON – About 60 out-of-state K-9's trained on explosives will soon be made temporary U.S. Marshals for the upcoming Super Bowl LI.

Moose is a living, breathing, 3-year-old explosives detector. He'll be attending Super Bowl 51 at NRG Stadium, along with thousands of fans and about 60 other K-9 detectives just like him.

"We have officers coming in from as far away as Guam, to be specially deputized. They are K-9 detection handlers to work on the Super Bowl project," U.S. Marshal Gary Blankinship said.

Blankinship says the U.S. Marshals are they only ones with the power to grant the K-9s temporary authority.

"That makes them a Special Deputy United States Marshal which gives them federal authority," Blankinship said.

The K-9s, including Moose, will be sniffing around five different NFL-sponsored venues throughout the week.

Blankinship says the popularity of the Super Bowl makes it a big target, so they're not taking any chances.

"Because so many people are in a large venue, it becomes something that could be an attractive target for someone wanting to do harm to large numbers of people so we take these things very seriously," Blankinship said.

Able to sniff out more than 19,000 different explosives, these pups are definitely high on the guest list for events like such as the Super Bowl.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.
