6-year-old on bike hit by car in NW Harris County

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A 6-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was hit by a driver while riding his bike Thursday in northwest Harris County.

Sheriff's deputies said boy and a relative were riding bikes along FM 529 at Glen Heim Place when a driver hit the child. He was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is expected to be OK.

Deputies said the two boys were riding in and out of traffic on the poorly lit streets and the child's bike did not have lights.

According to investigators, the driver was unable to see the kids when the boy was hit. The driver stopped and helped, officials said.

"(The) Driver stopped and has given information to us already and it appears it's going to be the bicyclist being in the roadway at night was a contributing factor to this crash," Deputy Victor Garcia said.

The sheriff's office said the driver is not expected to face charges.
