6-year-old football player dies after cardiac arrest led to coma

A 6-year-old youth football player has died after he suffered a cardiac arrest that left him in a coma and fighting for his life in the hospital.

Members of the Cypress Fury rallied behind Bryson Willis who had a sudden asthma attack Nov. 30 at home that sent him into cardiac arrest.

His father, Ryan Willis, is the head coach. “Bryson pretty much adores football,” Ryan said. “He loves it.”

He was in a coma since Monday at Texas Children’s Hospital.

"Doctors still don’t know what is going on," Ryan said. "It has been extremely difficult because Bryson has always been a healthy kid."

Ryan and his wife stayed by Byson's beside since Nov. 30 and were not able to go work.

Fortunately, the Willis Family got a lot of support. When the team found out Bryson was in the hospital, parents and teammates tried to help in any way they could.

“We just met this year, but we’re like a huge family,” said Jessica Cabello, who has children on the team.

Cabello set up a GoFundMe account, which raised more than $1,300. Not only are Bryson’s teammates making donations, there are also donations coming from families on other teams in the league.

“We've all tried to come around to the hospital and visit,” Cabello said. “I brought them some food and a couple other people brought food.”

One team parent even dropped off a Christmas tree at Bryson’s house. The family prayed that he recovered so they could decorate it in time for Christmas.

“The only thing I hope for on a daily basis is for him to regain consciousness and just smile, give me a hug and say ‘I love you Dad’,” Ryan said.
