Defense in Deputy Goforth murder case wants psych evaluation for accused killer

HOUSTON – Three more filings were submitted Wednesday in the case of a man charged with capital murder in the killing of Deputy Darren Goforth.

The filings are sealed, so neither side is commenting on what was put into the court record.

However, one of the filings is a request by the defense attorney for money to hire a psychiatrist to examine Shannon Miles, who has a history of mental illness.

Miles is accused of shooting Goforth more than a dozen times Aug. 28 at a gas station in far west Harris County.

Miles spent four months in a state mental hospital in 2012 after attacking a homeless man at an Austin shelter.

Two years before that, he was committed to the Harris County Psychiatric Center.

Since his arrest for Goforth's murder, sources said he's caused at least two disturbances in the jail where he's being kept in solitary confinement.

Miles is charged with capital murder, but no formal indictment has been returned. A grand jury is still hearing evidence in the case.
