A METRORail train hit a blind man as he crossed a downtown Houston intersection Wednesday.

Officials said Adair Smith, 58, was crossing the intersection at the tracks on Lamar and Main shortly after 11:30 a.m. when he was struck. He told witnesses that he heard the train, but did not know where to go because he could not tell its direction.

Smith lost consciousness for a short time. He was transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where his condition was not released.

The accident is under investigation.
