GALVESTON, Texas -- A 4-year-old boy was found dead Thursday inside a Jamaica Beach apartment housing a methamphetamine lab, the Galveston County Sheriff's Department told KPRC Local 2.
Deputies with the Galveston County Sheriff's Department found the boy not breathing inside an apartment on Blackbeard Road at about 4:30 a.m.
The boy's grandmother or her boyfriend called police for help. When they arrived, the boy was still not breathing and paramedics were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The medical examiner's office said the boy did not die from natural causes.
The Jamaica Beach Police Department called for the assistance of the Galveston County Sheriff's Department when officers noticed something suspicious in the apartment.
"During some preliminary examinations of the scene, there were a number of items found that suggest that methamphetamine was being manufactured at the residence. We have contacted the Drug Enforcement Administration as well as the (Department of Public Safety) Narcotics Unit," Sheriff's Department Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said.
Investigators said the grandmother and her boyfriend have given statements but neither is providing very much information. Neither has been charged with the boy's death or with operating a drug lab.
Authorities have not released the boy's identity because they have been unable to contact the boy's biological parents.
The boy's 2-year-old sister, who was inside the home when he was found dead, has been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
The incident remains under investigation.
