Relatives Say Slain DPS Worker Was On Suicidal Mission

Woman Recently Released From Hospital, Was Not Taking Medications

Relatives of a Department of Public Safety worker shot and killed by Houston police told KPRC Local 2 on Monday that the woman might have been on a suicidal mission.

DPS sent officers to look for Angelina Brewer when she did not show up for work on Monday. She had recently talked about committing suicide and colleagues were concerned about her.

An officer with the Houston Police Department spotted her driving a pickup truck at about 4:45 p.m., but she refused to pull over.

Officers used spikes to stop her truck in the 3200 block of North Shepherd Drive and 34th Street

Police said three officers opened fire when Brewer picked up a gun and pointed it at her sister.

"At that time, she was facing the passenger in the truck. When our officers discharged their weapons for the safety of the person that was inside the truck, they struck the suspect multiple times, causing her death at the scene," HPD Capt. Dwayne Ready said.

Brewer's sister told KPRC Local 2 that she was recently discharged from Ben Taub Hospital and was not taking her medication and that she was suicidal.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sgt. C.E. Anderson, Sgt. K.H. Bounds and Officer L.T. Gibson. Anderson was sworn in as an officer in May 1981. Bounds joined the force in December 1992 and Gibson joined in March 2000.

The police department's internal affairs and homicide divisions, along with the Harris County District Attorney's Office, are investigating that shooting.
