5 injured in church van, patrol car crash

HOUSTON – Five people were injured following a crash involving a church van and a deputy constable's patrol vehicle, authorities said.

The accident happened Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at 4006 Navigation near North York. According to authorities, deputy constables were en route to an emergency with lights and sirens on before the impact.

"(A) white panel van failed to yield the right of way, leaving the stop sign, pulled out in front of the responding unit with both lights and siren activated," said Cpl. Jarrel Caldwell with the Precinct 6 Constable's Office.

Three people in the van and two deputy constables were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Authorities said the injuries were not critical.

The van had a sign that said it is from the Iglesia de Cristo Fuente de Vida.

Ronnie Kircus said he was closing his barber shop when he heard a loud bang.

"I heard a loud noise, came out, cops were out there. They were hurt in the road. I tried to help them out and proceeded to call 911. I did the best I could to help them out," said Kircus.

The man said he tried to free a trapped deputy before focusing on the church van.

"I went over to the van, checked them out to see if they were OK. They were awake so I tried to talk to them. They weren't responding too well, but they were awake and they were looking around," said Kircus.
