A 4-year-old girl has been hospitalized after she was shot by her cousin.

It happened around noon Saturday in the 1400 block of Danby Heath Lane in north Harris County.

Authorities said a woman and her 10-year-old son were babysitting the 4-year-old cousin. The 10-year-old found a long rifle and accidentally shot the 4-year-old in the leg.

"It's really sad," said Robert Wilkins, a family friend. "The mother is very grieved right now."

Wilkins said the little girl will be okay but neighbors said they find the incident alarming.

"It scares me half to death, I mean it really does, because a 10-year-old is just a kid," said neighbor Jimmie Hayward.

"It's the greatest tragedies that catch us off guard and what we can do is learn from this situation," Wilkins said.

Making matters worse, Wilkins said just Saturday morning the 4-year-old's older sibling passed away from a blood disorder.

"It's a plateful, it really is," Wilkins said.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office Child Abuse Division is investigating the incident.

Several family members are being questioned. No charges have been filed yet.
