Coalition Troops Rescue American Abducted In Iraq In 2004

Hostage Rescued From Isolated Farmhouse

Coalition forces acting on a tip from an Iraqi detainee rescued American hostage Roy Hallums from an isolated farmhouse south of Baghdad Wednesday.

The military said Hallums "is in good condition and is receiving medical care." Officials said they also rescued an Iraqi citizen.

Hallums has been in captivity since Nov. 1, 2004.

Hallums' ex-wife, Susan Hallums, 53, said she spoke with the father of her children Wednesday morning and that he was alive. She calls it the "best phone call" she's ever received. She said he is free, after being held for more than 300 days.

"I believe all things are possible if you believe," Susan said to CNN.

She said Hallums is "optimistic" that he's going to be OK. She also said he didn't provide any details of his rescue.

The U.S. military said troops rescued Hallums in an isolated farmhouse 15 miles south of Baghdad.

"I can confirm he's been released," Susan Hallums told The Associated Press by telephone. "Considering what he's been through, I understand he's in good condition."

She said she hopes the reunion with Roy will be this weekend. Hallums and her husband of 30 years divorced a couple of years ago but remained good friends, she said. They have two daughters.

Roy Hallums, a 57-year-old worker for a Saudi company that does catering for the Iraqi army, was the last remaining hostage among six people who were kidnapped Nov. 1.

A video released by his kidnappers in January showed him with a gun pointed to his head. He said he'd been taken by a "resistance group" because he had "worked with American forces."
