Local 2 held a food drive Friday, along with H-E-B, the Houston Food Bank and the End Hunger Network to help Hurricane Katrina victims.

The drive was held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and collected more than just food, officials said.

"We need paper goods, glasses, plates -- things like that. We also need diapers, baby formula. We need some non-perishable food items, like peanut butter and those things that won't spoil and don't need to be refrigerated," said Joan Smith, with the Houston Food Bank.

Items Needed:
  • Paper goods such as plates, cups, diapers and tissue
  • Cleaning supplies, such as bleach, Top Job, Mr. Clean
  • Bottled water (no glass containers)
  • Single serving snacks such as Pop-Tarts and cereal bars
  • Peanut butter
  • Heat and eat foods such as chili, stew, canned pasta with sauce and canned vegetables
  • Any other single serving foods that don't require refrigeration
  • MREs (Meals Ready To Eat)
  • Baby formula
  • Personal hygiene products

Even though the drop-off locations at the Local 2 studios and H-E-B stores were shut down Friday night, donations can still be taken to the Houston Food Bank, 3811 Eastex Freeway. For more information, call (713) 223-3700.

Local 2 thanks the thousands of people who donated items that filled numerous 18-wheelers, as well as all the volunteers who donated their time.
