Pilot Flies Into No-Fly Zone Above President's Ranch

Cypress Man May Not Be Charged, Could Face FAA Sanctions

POSTED: Thursday, August 25, 2005

A Houston-area pilot violated restricted air space when he flew over President George W. Bush's Crawford ranch, Local 2 reported Thursday.

Two F-16 fighter jets circling the president's ranch intercepted Cypress resident Richard Ameen's plane and followed it to a northwest Harris County airport after federal aviation officials said he flew into the 30-mile no-fly zone at about 8:23 p.m. Wednesday.

Ameen was en route to Weiser Airpark, located off Highway 290 and Telge Road, when he flew into the restricted air space, about 30 miles northwest of Waco.

Federal officials told Local 2 pilots are responsible for knowing air restrictions.

Authorities with the Federal Aviation Administration said fighter jets escorted Ameen away from the ranch and followed him to the Houston-area airport.

After landing, Ameen told authorities with the Harris County Sheriff's Department and the Secret Service that it was a mistake.

"It was an accident on my part. I was not aware that the temporary flight restriction was that far out. Normally, T46 is, like, a 3-mile radius from the ranch," Ameen told Local 2.

Ameen was questioned but not arrested. Authorities said he probably won't be charged but could face FAA sanctions, which could include a fine or a temporary loss of his pilot's license.

The incident remains under investigation by federal officials.
