Authorities with the Houston Police Department said the officer was trying to arrest three men suspected of robbing and attacking several people in northeast Houston at about 1 a.m.

Police said a wrecker driver called them after he spotted the suspects allegedly attacking a man on Terry Street and Genova Street.

Officers arrived at the scene and took two men into custody. The third suspect tried to run.

"There was an attempt to Taser him. One dart didn't make contact so it didn't function and we had to physically take him down after that," HPD spokesman David Zaharis said.

Officers believe the suspects are behind a string of robberies in the area, in which baseballs bats and knives have been used in attacks on their victims.
