Baltimore Police Arrest Man On National Watch List

Police Don't Immediately Release Suspect's Name

POSTED: Monday, August 8, 2005

A man named in a grand jury indictment on immigration charges and appearing on a national watch list was arrested Sunday night in Baltimore County, Md.

County police said Muhammad Asif Haider was arrested during a traffic stop along Reisterstown Road near the Baltimore Beltway. The vehicle was stopped at a traffic light while waiting to enter onto the Beltway because it was driving without its headlights on.

A spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Police Department said Haider was one of three occupants in the vehicle. He is one of four people named in a New York grand jury indictment on charges of immigration document fraud.

Police said Haider's name came up on the national watch list when the arresting officer ran his identity through police computers. The Joint Terrorism Task Force is involved in the case, and Haider is expected in court Monday afternoon.

The other two occupants of the vehicle were allowed to continue on their way after providing valid identification.

Grand Jury Indictment

Haider and three other men were named in an indictment handed down on Aug. 3. U.S. attorneys alleged that the men made fraudulent Social Security cards and fraudulent green cards.

The documents were sold to a New York Police Department undercover agent between July 2002 and May 2003. Authorities believed the cards were to be used to gain entry into the United States.

Arrest warrants were issued on Aug. 3.
