A newborn girl found abandoned among trash in a west Houston alley continued to improve in a local hospital, while investigators searched for the baby's parents, Local 2 reported.

The baby girl was abandoned in a west Houston alley.

The 6-pound, 6-ounce, full-term newborn was found behind a shopping center on Memorial Drive near Dairy Ashford Road Sunday when an employee taking out trash at the Cyberium Game Center spotted her.

The baby, who is believed to be white or Hispanic, is listed in good condition at West Houston Medical Center. She was abandoned hours after her birth.

When she first arrived at the hospital, everyone called the infant "Baby Doe." But now, some are calling her "Angel Doe" because they said she has touched the hearts of everyone who has come in contact with her.

Representatives from Child Protective Services asked a judge to grant them temporary custody of the baby.

"We're just seeking help from the public in trying to identify who this baby is and maybe in locating her parents or relatives. Maybe there's a father out there who doesn't know he's a parent," CPS spokeswoman Estella Olquin said.

Olquin said CPS would like the mother or father to come forward in order to provide a medical history for the child.

Harris County has a number of families already approved for adoption of a newborn baby, so they will have plenty of options on where to place the girl.

Video game store employee Chris Patten found the baby. He said, at first, he thought the girl was a doll on a blanket that someone had thrown out.

"She started to move a bit," Patten told Local 2.

However, after a closer look, Patten said he saw the baby moving her arms and went to tell his boss.

"She wasn't crying. She was just kind of moving her arms a little bit. There were some ants kind of nearby," Cyberium Gaming Center Ethan Getz said.

"Maybe there was a hope that someone would pick her up, but there was nothing here for her. There was no care package, no note or anything -- just a baby in a blanket," Patten said.

Investigators said the baby's umbilical cord was cut off and tied with a rubber band. The baby was wrapped in a yellow blanket with a pacifier.

"If this citizen hadn't come along, most likely we would have found this baby dead," Houston Fire Department spokesman Melvin Wallace said.

It will be up to investigators to decide if charges should be filed against the mother if she is found.

Anyone with information about the baby is asked to call the CPS hotline at (800) 252-5400.

The Baby Moses Law, enacted by the state Legislature in 1999, allows mothers to legally leave their baby at facilities that can provide emergency care such as fire stations and hospitals.

This is the third baby abandoned in the Houston area this year. One of those babies died.
