Man Selling Newspapers Run Over, Killed

Officials Do Not Think Driver Knew He Ran Over Man

POSTED: Tuesday, May 17, 2005
UPDATED: 8:01 am CDT May 17, 2005

Officials said what was originally thought to be a fatal hit-and-run in northwest Harris County Tuesday morning might have just been a deadly decision made by a man selling newspapers, officials told Local 2.

Veterans Memorial Drive at Beltway 8, northwest Harris County

Authorities said a 61-year-old man selling Houston Chronicle newspapers was standing on Veterans Memorial Drive at Beltway 8 when a heavy-duty pickup truck ran over him at about 5:30 a.m. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the man walked underneath a trailer that a heavy-duty pickup truck was towing and was run over by the trailer when the light turned green.

Officials said the man reportedly walked under the trailer to sell a paper to a motorist sitting at a red light.

Witnesses told officials that the driver drove away from the scene.

Detectives think the driver kept driving because he did not realize he ran over the man.

Harris County said there would probably not be any charges filed but still want to talk with the driver.

One lane of Veterans Memorial Drive was shut down while officers investigated.
