HOUSTON -- Some local students are giving a little bit of themselves to help those battling serious illnesses, Local 2 reported Tuesday.
Cosmetology students at
Dobie High School, 10220 Blackhawk, cut students' hair at
Miller Intermediate School, 1002 Fairmont Parkway, to donate to Locks of Love.
The nonprofit organization provides hairpieces to children suffering from hair loss due to a medical condition.
Grace Gutierrez, 8, is one of the recipients of Locks of Love. She was diagnosed with cancer and before receiving her hairpiece, she remembered being teased.
"Sometimes they asked me if I'm a boy or girl," she said.
Natalie Silva knows the hairpieces give the children a renewed sense of confidence. She should know -- she was diagnosed with cancer five years ago.
"When you put your wig on, you don't look like a boy. It doesn't look like a boy is wearing a dress," Silva said.
Now she donates hair to other Locks of Love recipients.
