The Houston Health Department was sent to investigate a sewage spill in north Houston next to an abortion clinic, Local 2 reported.

A broken line caused raw sewage to bubble up out of a pipe and spread across a parking lot next to the Texas Ambulatory Surgical Center, located at 2421 N. Shepherd.

Witnesses said pieces of human tissue were among the waste and were convinced it came from the known abortion clinic.

Maribeth Smith is an employee of the car dealership next door. She is convinced she saw human body parts mixed in with the sewage Tuesday.

"Whether it's legal or not, it's not right," Smith said. "This whole area is nothing but raw sewage and bloody pieces. There were little legs coming out from one side."

She took photographs, believing the human tissue came from the clinic. She told Local 2 that aborted fetuses are being flushed down the toilet.

City health inspectors did not find evidence of that after spending several hours at the scene.

"I have not seen anything like that, visibly, at the location," said Jeffrey Conn, with the City of Houston Health Department.

Conn said the clinic uses a medical waste disposal service, as required by law. The health department confirmed there was some human tissue and body fluid in the sewage that bubbled up, but nothing that would not normally be found in raw sewage.

"It does not appear to be human fetuses," Conn said. "(It appears to be) blood clots."

The clinic did not have a comment for Local 2 and said its primary concern was the privacy of its clients.
