4 kids, ages 10-13, take car for joy ride in NW Harris County neighborhood

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Authorities say a group of kids took a car for a joy ride in a northwest Harris County neighborhood.

It happened at around 12:30 p.m. Friday at a house in the 12000 block of Ballardvale Lane.

Officials say four children, ages 10 to 13, got into one of their mother's cars and started driving.

They drove about three blocks down the road before they lost control, jumped a curb, sideswiped a tree and came to rest in front of the house.

"I heard the screeching coming around the corner and when I came outside I saw the car drive up the driveway here," neighbor Daron Eubanks said.

Eubanks says he rushed outside in time to see the four kids bail out of the car and start running away.

As the kids fled, the homeowner tried to figure out what happened.

"She asked me, what just happened because the house just shook. I was like, somebody just hit the side of your house and they took off," said Eubanks.

The airbag deployed, but none of the kids were injured.

The kids jumped out of the car to head back home. Officials say they quickly caught up with them and stayed with them until their parents arrived.

Deputies with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office are investigating.

Other neighbors say they aren't surprised by what happened.

"Oh my God. These kids are something else around here when they get out of school," said Cynthia Hawkins, who lives across the street from where the kids crashed the vehicle.
