Houston's 911 call system is back up and running Thursday after a breakdown Wednesday forced dispatchers to use a backup plan.

The system failure occurred at about 9 p.m. Wednesday and might have caused several emergency calls to go unanswered.

Officials said some calls were coming through and some were not when the system broke down.

"We had to go to our backup system, where we had to move some of our personnel downstairs to our back up system that way we could continue to receive calls. As for what the reason was, we're still looking into that matter, Houston Emergency Center spokesman Joe Laud told Local 2.

Houston Emergency Center officials said they believe the problem was not with their equipment, but with their phone provider -- SBC.

The cause of the outage remains under investigation.
