Alief Independent School District officials said one of its school buses hit the 4-year-old girl on Villaret at Navaidad in the Mission Bend subdivision at 3:40 p.m.

The girl and her father were at the bus stop to pick up her brother when she darted out in front of the bus, witnesses said. It happened so fast, the father could not save her. She died at the scene after the bus' front tires hit her.

The bus was taking home children from Petrosky Elementary School when the accident happened. Twenty-two children were on board. Most of the children did not witness the accident, according to sheriff's deputies.

Counselors and the school's principal were sent to the scene to meet with the children, who were taken back to the school until parents could pick them up.

The driver was a veteran driver with the district, who was visibly shaken after the accident, according to authorities.

The accident is under investigation.
