METRORail Train Collides With Truck On Tracks

METRORail Has 46th Accident

POSTED: Friday, June 18, 2004

A pickup truck on the tracks caused METRORail to have its 46th accident, News2Houston reported Friday.

Authorities said the truck was on the tracks at the Main and Franklin intersection around 10 p.m. Thursday when a train collided with it.

The train received minor damage to the front bumper. Details on the truck's damage were not released, but the accident is described as minor.

The wreck comes less than 24 hours after another wreck involving a METRORail train.

Three people were transported to a hospital after a rented Jaguar and a METRORail train collided in downtown Houston Wednesday night.

METRO police said the train and a rented 2005 model Jaguar were headed south on Main Street around 11 p.m. Wednesday when the driver of the car attempted to make an illegal left turn onto Elgin.

The train slammed into the driver side of the rented Jaguar, sending three of the four people inside the car to a hospital.

None of the 10 to 15 passengers who were on the train at the time of the accident reported injuries, METRO police told News2Houston.

METRO said the train received about $10,000 in damage, and that the rented Jaguar was totaled.

"(The Jaguar) has seen better days," METRO Police Sgt. Antonio Ford said.

Police gave the driver, who is from Kansas, a ticket, and said alcohol might have played a role in the wreck.

"The driver admitted he had a few drinks," Ford said.

Officials have not said what charges the driver faces.

METRORail's 43rd and 44th accidents happened last week.
