I picked up this nugget from a friend of mine at the National Hurricane Center. He told me despite what you saw in the movie, ?The Day After Tomorrow,? getting a category 5 hurricane north of Virginia is climatologically impossible. The waters are too cold to keep it that intense and the upper level flow is almost always pushing east away from the coast line. A major hurricane is still possible but rare, but a category 5 can?t happen. Interesting.
