3-year-old sent home with illegal substance from Baytown Head Start Center

HOUSTON – An alarming letter was sent home to parents of the Baytown Head Start Center last Friday.

It was to inform them a student recently went home with a small baggie of an unknown substance.

That child's parents brought it to school the next day and authorities were notified.

The substance was later tested by police and determined to be an illegal substance.

David Pryor, who lives nearby said, "It had to come from somewhere. A 3-year-old is who I believe they found it with. Where would it come from?"

According to Head Start management, the student said she got it from another student and their parents have since been contacted.

An investigation remains ongoing.

Still, people like Rebecca Hale, who was considering bringing her own grandchild to the school, has since changed her mind.

"I was considering looking into it. I had gotten the phone number off of there. I was going to call them, but I'm not now. Not after hearing that, no," Hale said.

Baytown police, Childcare Licensing and Child Protective Services are all now looking into the matter.

The Harris County Department of Education is also telling parents in the letter:

"Rest assured that the safety of our students is our top priority, be more protective of your children and for the school to watch out a little closer."
