A Montgomery County three-year-old died Monday after being hit by a driver, officials said.

At around 4 p.m. in the Legends Ranch subdivision near Oak Ridge North, the child was playing in a ditch while her 12-year-old brother was watching her. The little girl came out of the ditch just as a car was turning onto the street and up an incline.

The driver, who lives a few doors down from the victim, said she felt a thud and looked in her rear-view mirror to see the child laying in the street.

An ambulance took the child to Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands where she died.

The accident is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
