HOUSTON - A shelter-in-place was ordered at a southeast Harris County chemical plant because of a chemical leak at a nearby facility on Friday.
LynondellBasell officials said employees at the Bayport Polymers Plant in the 12000 Bay Area Boulevard were told to shelter in place as a precaution.
According to AkzoNobel plant officials, there was a release of pivaloyl chloride to the chemical sewer at it's facility in the 12900 block of Baypark about 6:45 a.m. That resulted in the decomposition of the product and three people were exposed to the chemical. They were all taken to a hospital as a precaution.
AkzoNobel ordered a shelter-in-place at its facility, but it was lifted about 8 a.m. The shelter-in-place at LyondellBasell remained active at 11:30 a.m.
Officials said there was not a shelter-in-place for any residents or other businesses in the area.
