    EVENT DESCRIPTION: The much-anticipated Stafford Centre, a convention center and performing-arts complex, will be unveiled to the public during a special three-day grand-opening celebration from Friday, March 5, though Sunday, March 7. The complex features four festival fields, a grand ballroom, a convention center and a 1,100-seat performing-arts theatre. Located south of U.S. 59 at the intersection of Murphy Road and Cash Road, the Stafford Centre is a unique new venue for the Houston area and the first performing-arts complex of its kind in Fort Bend County. "The Stafford Centre's grand-opening celebration will have something for everyone, from an outdoor festival to an indoor symphony performance," said Tim Mabe, director of the Stafford Centre. "We are thrilled to showcase our city's beautiful new facility with these special productions by local and international performers."

    EVENT DESCRIPTION: "Chance favors the prepared mind." Preparing for natural and man-made emergencies has become a modern day necessity. The Katy Texas Stake Women's Organization, known as the Relief Society; of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has announced a Community Emergency Preparedness Fair for Saturday, March 6, 2004 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. This event will combine three speakers, two from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and one from the National Weather Service. They will provide an overview of the foreseeable types of terrorist attack threats, outline the "all hazards" preparation steps that should be taken at home and work for both natural and man-made emergencies.

    EVENT DESCRIPTION: On March 14th at Bear Creek Park, Pavilion #6 (in Houston, just south of Clay Rd, between Hwy 6 and Eldridge), Southern High Rollers (SHR) will be hosting a 4-wheel drive truck show and raffle to help raise money for 7-yr old Hailey Tyce. Hailey is the grandchild of a METRO police officer and has been intensely fighting cancer for two years. The medical bills and cancer treatments are not cheap and they continue to increase, Hailey and her family need help to continue on. The 4wd truck show will start at 1:00pm and be non-competitive, except for bragging rights for crowd favorite. People will be bringing out their show trucks, mud trucks, buggies, rockcrawlers, "pile of parts" rigs, any type of rig they can push, pull, drive, trailer, or drag to the parking lot. The cost of entering the truck show is a donation to Hailey and her family, the size of that donation is their choice.

    EVENT DESCRIPTION: Operation Kid Safe is a first of its kind event offered absolutely free to all families in an effort to help teach kids and parents, in a safe and fun manner, survival methods and escape techniques against potential predators. Self-defense instructors will demonstrate many of these effective techniques. Kids will be encouraged to practice with their parents all the techniques taught, so dress accordingly. For capable families, we ask you to donate couple of canned food items, which will be given to a local shelter, or an unwrapped toy to be donated to under-privileged children.

    EVENT DESCRIPTION: Montgomery College is hosting Healthier U, a community wide health fair, beginning Wednesday, March 24, through Friday, March 26. Activities during the three-day event include educational and interactive booths, a 5k fun run/walk, a heart-healthy chili cook-off, a cookie bake-off, silent auction, health screens and book fair. Proceeds from this event benefit scholarships for health-related professions. The event will be held on the Montgomery College campus and the public is invited free of charge. "Last year, Healthier U allowed us to award 22 students in health-related programs with $500 scholarships," said Mary Hoff, Healthier U coordinator. The 5k fun run/walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, March 26. Registration is $10 and t-shirts will be given to all participants.
