A METRORail train collided with a vehicle Monday afternoon, making it the eighth accident since the system began operating.

Police said it happened at the intersection of Fannin and Dryden around 2:45 p.m.

Officials said the Chevy Suburban was trying to make an illegal left turn in front of Texas Children's Hospital when the train hit it.

"He didn't realize he needed to be in the left turn lane -- (he) made an illegal left-hand turn. The train was coming behind him," said Eva LeClerk, with METRO Police. "It's pretty frustrating. Our own forces are tied up right now with the rail operations. We do have some officers out doing some enforcement. However, it's not nearly as many as we would like to have."

The Suburban's window was shattered in the accident. An ambulance took the driver to a local hospital. His condition was not released, but an officer on the scene told News2Houston that he did not have any obvious physical injuries.

The driver was ticketed.
