A terminally ill boy who was granted his wish of a shopping spree lost all of the toys hours later when they were stolen on the ride home, police told News2Houston Tuesday.

The Texas Wishing Well Foundation grants wishes to terminally ill children.

On Monday, Steven Rael, 13, had his wish come true -- a $3,000 shopping spree at Toys R Us.

"I just felt real happy," Rael said. "I got a Playstation II, an XBox, a bike. It was the best day of my life."

Last year, Rael lost his leg to cancer, which spread to his lungs. Doctors said he has more than 100 tumors.

After Rael filled up six shopping carts, they hired a Liberty Cab van to haul the toys home.

Hours passed and the cab never showed up.

"We just waited. At first we thought, 'Well, maybe he broke down," said Diane Lewis, Rael's mother.

Investigators said the cabdriver took off with the toys.

"I just looked at my mom and I said, 'How can he do this to us? And I just started to cry,'" Rael said.

"I think we're still in shock because we just never expected him to do something like this to a child," Lewis said.

The cabdriver was caught Monday night, according to authorities, when two of his Liberty Cab co-workers turned him in.

The driver was arrested on four other outstanding warrants. He is expected to be charged with the theft.

Liberty Cab said it would donate $3,000 to the Texas Wishing Well Foundation.

"He's gone through a really hard time for two years," Lewis said.

"I just live my life day by day," Rael said.
