A civil lawsuit was filed against Joe Ratliff, a pastor at Brentwood Baptist Church SBC, 13033 Landmark. The church is also named in the lawsuit.

The accuser, who did not want to be identified, released audiotapes of phone conversations he had with Ratliff, according to his attorneys.

The 37-year-old alleged victim was counseled by Ratliff. He said Ratliff offered to pay for sex during one of the sessions.

The alleged victim said he was so traumatized, he recorded phone conversations for proof.

The following conversation could be heard on the tapes.

Ratliff: "Let's see, you know I'm an oral freak. I just need to (expletive) you from head to toe. You don't got to (expletive) me or nothing."

Ratliff: "I was going to go to this little club tonight. They got this little club here in Atlanta where the boys be dancing on the tables and (expletive), you know."

The attorney said they released the tapes to show they believe in their client and hope more possible victims come forward.

"Our client has been bold. He has come forward. He has said that these things happened to him and we feel, at this time, other individuals, similar things have happened to them, can contact us and they can come forward and stop the silence," said Kevin Murray, the accuser's attorney.

Church members said the case should be tried in court and not in public.

"We feel strongly that this matter should not be discussed and tried in the press, but that it should be taken care of in a court of law," said Jackie Preston, with Brentwood Baptist Church.

A court date has not been set. Criminal charges have not been filed against Ratliff.

The incident allegedly happened in February 2001. According to the lawsuit, Ratliff allegedly forced the victim into a church office and assaulted him.

The civil lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of monetary damages from Ratliff and Brentwood Baptist Church.

Ratliff has been with Brentwood Baptist Church for 22 years. One of the church's buildings bears his name.
