HOUSTON -- A Continental Airlines Express jet narrowly missed a single-engine plane that flew over Bush Intercontinental Airport without permission, officials said Friday.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot of the small plane did not respond to calls from air traffic controllers shortly after 3 p.m., so other pilots were warned that it was in the area.
The pilot of the Continental Express jet received an alert from his traffic collision avoidance system and climbed 300 feet. He missed the other plane by 100 feet.
The private pilot continued on to his original destination. He told the FAA that his GPS malfunctioned. He was not taken into custody or arrested.
The Continental Express jet landed safely without any injuries. The Express jet pilot will have to file a near mid-air collision report.
