Pregnant Woman Dies In Crash, Baby Saved

POSTED: 4:49 p.m. CDT July 25, 2003

A pregnant woman died in a traffic accident Thursday, but doctors were able to save her unborn child, officials told News2Houston.

Investigators said Andrea Garcia-Barrera was involved in an accident on FM 1485 at Brown Road in southeast Montgomery County. The driver of a truck lost control on the wet roads and slammed into her car, officials said.

She was nine months pregnant.

Emergency crews transported Garcia-Barrera Conroe Regional Medical Center.

Dave Pairett was one of the paramedics at the scene.

"A pregnant patient like that -- we always consider that there's two people that we're going to be working on -- mom and baby. So, we'll always work mom knowing that doing everything for mom is going to be helping baby," Pairett said.

Garcia-Barrera went into cardiac arrest en route to the hospital, after she called her mother and husband, officials said.

"Whenever we got there, she was unconscious and not coherent at all so knowing that just prior to that, she had called her family (it made you feel better)," Pairett said.

Doctors delivered the baby, who is listed in critical condition in the neo-natal unit.

Garcia-Barrera was recently hired to teach second grade at Creighton Elementary School.

She was to start her job in August.
