CONROE -- A mother in Conroe plans to travel about 8,000 miles with her 4-year-old daughter for a special treatment that she hopes will yield sight, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
Ashlynn Dunn looks like any other 4-year-old, but she cannot see you.
"She is not your typical blind child. At all. Most people don't know she's blind until we tell them," said her mom, Sheri Dunn. Dunn said Ashlynn lost her sight after she was shaken while in the care of someone outside her family.
After many tests, Dunn said doctors concluded it was Shaken Baby Syndrome. Dunn said, "She has optic nerve atrophy. Which means that her nerves aren't firing. There's no information going in between there."
Dunn said Ashlynn can only see bright light. While doing research online, Dunn found a group conducting stem cell transplants. She said, "In December, we're going to China. I found, on the Internet... gotta love the Internet, that they're doing treatments there to help people with Ashlynn's conditions to see again."
Dunn admits Ashlynn's own doctors are cautious. Mom said it's worth a try. Dunn said, "Even given that chance. Even if it was a 25 percent success rate, I'd still have to give it a shot."
Ashlynn and her mom plan to leave for China in December. They expect to be there more than a month. Dunn said the treatment will cost $34,000. She is raising money with the help of the nonprofit, National Transplant Assistance Fund.
