HOUSTON -- A 2-year-old girl has lost her battle with cancer, but a community is carrying on her legacy, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.
In her two years, Layla Grace Marsh touched thousands of lives.
"Layla has touched people not only in Houston, but all over the world," event organizer Jennifer Medina said.
Dozens of people packed the Chuy's off of the Northwest Freeway Tuesday for a fundraiser in her name.
"I think it's wonderful to see how the world will come together when it's hard, and that they're still good people out there," said Bernadette Cagney.
Layla died early Tuesday morning after fighting a battle with cancer she could not win. She suffered from stage-4 neuroblastoma, a type of cancer normally found in children or infants.
"I found out at work today, actually, and I couldn't work after that," said Roger Muffley, a Marsh family friend.
He said losing Layla has hurt him in a way he didn't expect.
"Her miracle might have not pulled through, but she's a miracle in my life. She changed my life, and there's no other way I can say it. That's why hit me hard," said Muffley.
He's not alone. Everyone spent the night mourning yet admiring the life of a little girl, who most here had never met.
"Even though I didn't know Layla, I know she what she was going through and I know the type of fight she was putting up," said Bernadette Cagney.
It was a show of support for a life lost way too early, but for a little girl who's legacy continues to grow.
