HOUSTON -- A man fired shots that wounded two Liberty County sheriff's deputies Tuesday before he turned the gun on himself, investigators told KPRC Local 2.
Deputies were called out to a family disturbance in the Woodland Hills neighborhood along County Road 6473 near County Road 6479 near Dayton about 6 a.m.
Investigators said Rickey Juneau met the deputies with gunfire when they arrived.
Deputy Rex Evans, 40, and Deputy Jeremy Marcantel, 33, suffered shrapnel wounds. They were both wearing bulletproof vests.
Paramedics said the deputies' injuries were not life-threatening. They were both taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital. They suffered head and upper body injuries, officials said.
Evans, who has been with the sheriff's office for about six months, was treated and released, officials said. Marcantel remained hospitalized in stable condition.
There was a five-hour standoff with Juneau before he was found dead in his front yard. Investigators said he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Juneau's relatives said he had a history of mental illness.
"He thought the government was out to get him, as far as tapping his phone lines and bugging his house and stupid things like that," relative Samantha Jeane said. "He was in the process of getting medication for his schizophrenia. I guess he couldn't hold on long enough."
Another relative told investigators that Juneau was upset Tuesday morning because another relative couldn't do a favor for him.
"He asked the brother-in-law if he could transport him to the state of Louisiana to pick up a car," said Richard Standifer with the Texas Department of Public Safety. "The brother-in-law was not able to, as he is a truck driver, and he left. That did seem to agitate the shooter."
