A Houston couple was shot and killed late Tuesday night as they returned home from grocery shopping, authorities said.

The shootings happened shortly before 11 p.m. at the couple's home, 1733 W. Main, in southwest Houston.

Investigators told News2Houston that Justine Kathryn Maxwell, 24, who recently found out she was pregnant, and her 28-year-old boyfriend, who has not been identified, were shot several times as they walked into their home.

"They had just walked into the house," Houston police Sgt. C. B. Douglas said. "They were carrying bags and the shootings started inside. She ran outside."

Neighbors said that Maxwell ran into her front yard screaming for help.

Police said that they believed Maxwell had already been shot once, and then the gunman came outside and shot her again.

"The officers went into the house and they checked and they found (the man) inside also dead. They're both dead from gunshot wounds," Douglas said.

Detectives said that the couple had just moved into the house about 1 ½ months ago and in that time had been working on turning one room of their home into a tattoo parlor.

Since the couple had been remodeling their house, police said that there were several paint cans and other supplies in the home that made it difficult to determine if the place had been ransacked.

Neighbors said that they never heard a struggle -- just gunshots.

"It makes me very sad," neighbor Moly Fasano said. "I heard the woman was pregnant, which is three lives. It's real sad."

Police said that the couple's pickup was taken from the scene.

The pickup is described as a gray, 2000 Toyota pickup with a wave of painted dots on the doors, a camper and license plate No. 3PZ-S22.

The shootings are under investigation.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS.
