GALVESTON, Texas -- Mardi Gras kicks off in Galveston this weekend, bringing in tourist dollars that are needed to boost the island's economy, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
If you walk down the strand, you will hear the music pumping, see people wearing masks and the universal sign of Mardi Gras -- beads.
"It's fun because you can trade them, give them away and get about anything you want if you have good beads," resident Steve Bonnin said.
Mardi Gras Galveston is one of the most popular annual events in Texas. Galveston officials said the island is ready to bring on the fun and the money it will pump into the island's economy.
"People are willing to spend money, go to restaurants, go to the bars, shop and book a hotel room so they don't have to drive back. Mardis Gras, especially this year, is very important to our economy," said Alicia Cahill with the city of Galveston.
With businesses open again and crowds on the streets, the islanders are hopeful for a successful event.
"This island has spent the past 16 months recovering from Ike. This island is ready for a party and ready for visitors, " said Cahill.
"Anyone that comes to the island is going to help the economy and it helps our spirits," resident Angela Chapman said.
This is the 99th year Galveston has officially celebrated Mardi Gras. For more information about the events, parades and activities, go to click2houston.com.
