HOUSTON -- A Harris County sheriff's deputy remained hospitalized Thursday after he was accidentally wounded after dropping his shotgun, authorities said.
The shooting happened shortly before 12:30 a.m. outside a beauty salon, located in the 19200 block of Clay Road in northwest Harris County.
Investigators told News2Houston that the officer was responding to a robbery call at the salon, which turned out to be a domestic disturbance.
When the deputy arrived, he found a man outside the business trying to get in to talk to his girlfriend, who was still inside the shop with another woman, authorities said.
Officers said that the deputy accidentally dropped his weapon as he was attempting to handcuff the man to calm him down.
"At some point during the time that he was affecting the arrest and taking the male into custody, he dropped his shotgun," Sgt. Jerry Prieto said. "The shotgun struck the ground (and) discharged. When it discharged the round struck the lower part of his left arm."
Paramedics rushed the deputy to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he is listed in good condition.
One of the women inside the shop was also hospitalized, because deputies said that she was very intoxicated.
Sheriff's officials said that no charges are expected to be filed in the shooting.
