HOUSTON -- A high school student was killed and his vehicle was stolen outside a southeast Houston apartment, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
Houston police said DeAndre Elliot, 17, was shot at about 11:30 p.m. on the doorstep of an apartment in the Cullen Park Apartments in the 4700 block of Wenda near Cullen.
Investigators said he had been visiting his girlfriend and had just walked outside when he was shot in the head and chest. He then knocked on the girlfriend's door and died a short time later.
The gunman fled in Elliot's 1993 Buick Park Avenue with Texas license plate No. 552-GNK, police said.
Elliot was a star football player at Worthing High School. Extra counselors were on hand at the school to help grieving classmates.
"Someone just took his life over some rims for nothing -- just took his life for nothing," friend Stephen Mathews said.
Elliot's friends said he worked hard to buy rims for his car.
"Dre was the type -- he used to always talk to me and saying how he wanted to get his football scholarship and was going to go play someplace like Florida or something. I used to tell Dre, 'Just pursue your dreams,'" friend Bruce Wilson said.
His friends now comfort Elliot's girlfriend.
"Words can't explain how much we love him. And my best friend truly loves him. He will be missed," friend Brandi Bellard said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
