GALVESTON, Texas -- A Galveston woman was hit in the head with a hammer when a man tried to steal her purse, police told KPRC Local 2 Thursday.
Larry D. Champion, 48, of Galveston, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Investigators said Champion approached Linda Ochoa, 59, of Houston, when she was walking in the 2200 block of Avenue B, hit her in the head with the hammer and began pulling on her purse at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Officials said Champion was not able to get her purse and fled the scene.
A witness gave police a description of the attacker and Champion was arrested in a nearby alley. A hammer was also found at the scene, officers said.
Champion's bond was set at $250,000 because of an extensive criminal history, police said.
