Heights Home Catches Fire

Special Needs Occupant, Caregiver Rescued

POSTED: Thursday, November 19, 2009
UPDATED: 2:28 pm CST November 19, 2009

Another Heights-area home caught fire, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

1500 block of Herkimer

Investigators said the blaze broke out at a home in the 1500 block of Herkimer at West 16th Street shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters rescued a special needs man and his caretaker after a neighbor called 911.

"I came downstairs and ran across the street. Sure enough, it wasn't a controlled burn. The house was burning and it was starting to creep up the side of the house," neighbor Dena McGee said.

HFD investigators said they are not sure yet if the fire is connected to 18 others in the area.

Police dogs were brought to the scene to try and pick up the suspect's scent.

No arrests have been made.

The cause is under investigation.
