HOUSTON -- A warehouse in Stafford is bursting at the seams with goodies for the troops and Marine Moms anxious to have their sons and daughters home safe.
Houston Marine mom Mary Williams said her son Lance Corp. Kevin Williams, "has been (serving overseas) now for seven months and he's ready to come home."
Earlier this year, the Houston Marine Moms put out a call to students and teachers in Fort Bend ISD to send donations to our troops fighting in Afghanistan.
The kids heard the battle cry and a flood of snacks and toiletries followed.
Organizer Karla Ritzen explained, "It's very hard over there. They're living in deplorable conditions and they can't take a bath. They have no electricity to plumbing and we want to make sure that we can make their life a little bit easier."
Ritzen added that part of the appeal to schools included photos of Fort Bend alumni now serving overseas.
She told Local 2, "There have been so many schools that really got behind this because they saw somebody they could connect with that's over there fighting for them."
With all the donations in-house at the donated warehouse space, the Marine Moms are putting out another call for help. This time, they need volunteers willing to tackle the monumental task of boxing up the 500 care packages so they can be shipped out on Saturday.
Mary Williams said her son, Kevin, won't receive one because he's headed home. But she knows how much these thoughts from home are appreciated by the soldiers.
Williams said, "They're doing a very, very hard job and they're sacrificing a lot. It lets them know that they're not forgotten and that people are supporting them."
If you'd like to help box up the care packages, you can join the Houston Marine Moms on Saturday at the warehouse located at 12705 Kirkwood in Stafford.
