Woman Killed Unloading Groceries

Muriel Kirkpatrick, 79, Shot In Neck

POSTED: Sunday, November 15, 2009
UPDATED: 4:58 pm CST November 16, 2009

A woman was shot to death while unloading groceries at her northwest Harris County apartment complex, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the shooting happened in a back parking lot at the Landmark apartment complex on Barker Cypress Road at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators said a person approached Muriel Kirkpatrick, 79, and shot her in the neck. Kirkpatrick was taken to Katy Memorial Hospital, where she died.

"That poor woman. She never hurt nobody. She liked to get out and walk. She looked like she was in good shape," neighbor Mike Erickson said. "It's probably over a $5 bill or something. Somebody takes a life. It's just a shame."

"That means that there's a killer out there. And you don't know, you don't know who. Somebody could walk up to me on the street and boom, kill me," neighbor Jane Marie Erickson said.

Surveillance videos showed Kirkpatrick entering and leaving the store, but nothing that was suspicious.

She drove four miles to her apartment and was shot several feet from her door.

The gunman left Kirkpatrick to die in the parking lot. Her vehicle, groceries and belongings appeared to be untouched.

"It appears to be a random act, but we don't know. We don't have motive. We don't have a suspect," said Cristina Garza with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

The shooter fled the scene. Detectives said they do not have a description of the attacker.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
