HOUSTON -- A fire in the Heights may be another in a series of blazes set by a suspected serial arsonist, KPRC Local 2 reported.

A vacant house for sale on West 23rd Street near Bevis Street went up in flames at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"We were scared that they would try to target this home because it was always vacant," resident Elias Margonis said. "We would always see interesting people come in and out of there. It's just unfortunate that it actually did happen."

Arson dogs sniffed through the rubble, but investigators have not said if the fire is absolutely linked to the suspected serial arsonist.

This is the 18th suspicious fire in the Heights since August. Most of them have been set at vacant homes.

No one has been hurt in the fires, but residents fear that it's just a matter of time before someone does get hurt.

"Pretty soon the guy's going to burn a house somebody lives in," resident Joseph Mitchell said.

"Sooner or later, he's got to run out of vacant houses," resident Pat Nichols said.

Neighbors said firefighters responded quickly, but they're ready for the fires to stop.

"We've got to catch this guy," Margonis said. "After seeing everyone here tonight, it's definitely obvious that the city is doing what's needed to try to catch whoever is doing this, or the different groups of people. I don't know if it's one person or copycats or whoever. It's just scary that they're concentrating in this area and that's what concerns all of us."

Residents wonder what the suspected serial arsonist's motivation is.

"Attention? Initiation? Just because?" Nichols said.
