Hospital Workers Shocked By Shooting

Fort Hood Shooting Victims Rushed To Darnell Army Medical Center

UPDATED: 4:41 pm CST November 6, 2009

Doctors and nurses at a hospital at Fort Hood described what they saw as those wounded in a massive shooting on the Army post rushed to them for help, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

As SWAT teams rushed into the area surrounding the Soldier Readiness Center on Thursday, the injured were rushed to hospitals and into the arms of medical professionals. The closest hospital is Darnell Army Medical Center on the Army post.

"Anyone and everyone was down there," nurse Kim Dembrosky said. "They were all in the hallways, in the rooms, just waiting to help any way that they could. Just incredible, the support that was there."

"We got hit by several waves of casualties, all at once," said Col. Kimberly Kesling, deputy commander of clinical services. "More than you would ever see in any civilian facility anywhere. My people performed superbly and saved a lot of lives yesterday."

Medical workers at Darnell said they saw about 20 patients. Once the closest hospitals filled, the injured were transferred to places like Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. Officials there put out a call for blood donations and they came flooding in.

Workers said images of the bloodshed stayed with them when they went home.

"The patients I had seen and treated and resuscitated … how were they doing? Was I going to come see them today? Just wondering if everything would be OK," said Capt. Reece Ritz, an emergency room doctor at Darnell.
