HOUSTON -- Many people have been speculating and debating about what could have been done to prevent the tragedy at Fort Hood, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.
It was a delicate balancing act for conservative radio talk show host Michael Berry.
"Whether this is an act of terrorism or he was aggravated at his bunk mate, we don't know yet," Berry said.
Berry was the voice of reason as caller after caller flooded his line to express their sadness and outrage over the shooting rampage.
Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan has been accused of killing 13 and wounding 30 on the base on Thursday afternoon. He was shot and was hospitalized. Army officials said he was on a ventilator.
"If it's due to his religious influences, will it be considered a hate crime?" one caller asked.
"This should be one of the best armed places" another caller said. "I carry a gun everywhere I go."
"I don't think you can say, based on his religious background immediately, that's what caused this," Berry said.
Some people are already focusing on Islam, Hasan's reported religion. Investigators said Hasan caught their intention months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.
Dr. Aziz Siddiqi, the president of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, said the Koran specifically teaches that anyone who kills a person kills all of humanity.
"Islam forbids these kinds of acts," Siddiqi said. "Soldiers are supposed to save lives."
