HOUSTON -- Some morning motorists had a tough commute Thursday because a fatal collision shut down part of a freeway, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston police said a small car hit an 18-wheeler on the southbound lanes of the Southwest Freeway near Wilcrest Drive at about 2:40 a.m.
The car hit some plastic barrels and the driver was killed upon impact, investigators said. The car was smashed so badly that police were having difficulty determining the make and model.
The 18-wheeler's trailer came loose, overturned and skidded across the freeway.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt.
Southbound traffic was diverted to the feeder road and the high-occupancy vehicle lane was closed. Inbound traffic was slowed because of rubbernecking.
The freeway was reopened shortly after 8 a.m.
