Homeowner Shoots, Kills Man

Police: Homeowner Knows Man He Shot

POSTED: Wednesday, November 4, 2009
UPDATED: 12:44 pm CST November 4, 2009

A homeowner shot and killed a man who he thought was an intruder, but police said it ended up being an accident, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said the homeowner was sleeping when he heard a loud noise at the front door of his townhome on Augusta Drive at Burgoyne Road about 3 a.m. Wednesday.

"He had been burglarized before," Sgt. W.l. Meeler said. "He assumed somebody was burglarizing his apartment."

Police said the homeowner grabbed his gun.

"He saw a figure coming into his room. He fired one shot, striking the male in the chest," Meeler said.

It turns out the 30-year-old man wasn't a burglar, officials said.

"The male fell and he (the homeowner) recognized the male as somebody he knew before," Meeler said.

The man died at the home. His name was not released. His car was found running in the parking lot. Police said they don't know why he went to the home.

Residents said they heard gunfire at about 10 p.m. Tuesday. Police have not said if the two incidents were connected.

"It could have been random," one resident said. "I figured it's a pretty nice complex regardless, so I didn't expect it."
